White Beach House
Circa 1901
The owner’s research and city records indicate this house, built in the earliest days of Venice of America (six years before the canals were dredged and filled with water), was originally a duplex. Subsequently subdivided into four apartments, it’s been restored to a duplex. The house’s original exterior is believed to have been redwood siding and shingles. Its ground floor front rooms were a sun porch through which a central staircase was accessed.

Windward Circle Arts Building (Steven Ehrlich Architects)
1988 by Steven Ehrlich Architects
Commissioned to design three Windward Circle buildings at Venice’s center, preeminent Venice architect Steven Ehrlich created structures that allude to historic Venice, California and Italy. The Windward Circle Arts Building references the towers and loggias of the original City of Water. It also refers, in scale, situation and façade, to the site’s original Antlers Hotel.

Windward Farms
Surprisingly good little market right at Windward and Pacific, geared toward healthy eating. Now selling beer and wine. I’m told the tuna sandwich is sublime. Fresh fruit and vegetables. Lots of natural and organic food items as well as nice guacamole and spicy kimche.

YAS Yoga & Spinning
This local yoga and spinning spot—to my knowledge the first of its kind—is blowing up: they’ve begun selling franchises. A baby YAS may soon be spinning up near you (though word has it that they’ll be owner-operated: Couch potatoes need not apply). Full disclosure: The Doglord is a full-on, bat-s**t-crazy YASerciser.
