UNDERGROUND DIARIES

Before there was Dogtown Ink there was Yahoo News Underground. At least where DI's Chief Instigator is concerned. Following are posts featuring Underground output...with a touch of contextual commentary.

The Face of Krump?

The Face of Krump?

Tommy the Clown, the undisputed father of clown dancing and the de facto face of krump, is no Bozo. Risen from the mean streets of South Los Angeles, his self-reinvention from young drug thug to beloved community role model is classic Americana…just like his rainbow wig.

Rocketry Love

Rocketry Love

Covering rocketeers and amateur model rocketry was the good idea of my publisher Cyrus Krohn. Though I understood people like Burt Rutan were building breathtaking private sector spaceships, I still thought of model rocketry as something done by kids with modest kit rockets. Silly me…

Rocket Boy Goes Big (with a little help from his dad)

Rocket Boy Goes Big (with a little help from his dad)

Aidan Sojourner and his dad, Cliff, are serious rocketeers. In this vid, they send a 12-foot Nike Smoke screaming into the wild blue over California’s Central Valley. Aidan wants to someday send a rocket to Neptune to retrieve diamonds. I’ve already invested…

Shredding the envelope (w/goblins, rubber chickens & teriyaki rice bowls)

Didrik and I showed up at the Mojave Desert’s Lucerne Dry Lake bright and early for this February morning, Rocketry Organization of California launch. At 3ºF, it was about 50º colder on the lake bed than it had been in Venice when we left. The cold proved merely a short-lived distraction. The rocketeers’ high spirited, high-flying hijinks soon had our complete attention…

Rocketeers—the definition of a blast!

Rocketeers—the definition of a blast!

Amateur rocketeers are n-n-n-nut-jobs. At least that was my impression of the handful of Rocketry Organization of California (ROC) members with whom I stood shivering in the 3° F-F-F-Fahrenheit February dawn on a vast, windswept expanse of scorched earth in the Mojave Desert, known as Lucerne Dry Lake.

Large Dangerous Rocket Ships

Large, Dangerous Rocket Ships! (and other exceptionally named confabs)

Who doesn’t find the idea of an event named Large, Dangerous Rocket Ships (LDRS) intoxicating? The moment I heard it, I was sold. Art Cars, Highway Stars

Art Cars, Highway Stars

Didrik and I saw off this art caravan in San Francisco’s East Bay then caught up again with them in Arizona for the last leg of their drive to the border town of Douglas, AZ. The art cars all attracted all kinds of attention, none more so than Rebecca Caldwell’s Carthedral, which nearly sent several passing motorists motoring off the road.

Inside the Art Car Mind (Hide the Krazy Glue!)

Inside the Art Car Mind (hide the Krazy Glue)

The pure spectacle of art cars often overshadows consideration of what’s behind them: Who turned the Olds into a giant piece of sushi? What were they thinking? This vid explores the art car mind.

Topsy-turvy Bus (Ben & Jerry's latest flavor?)

Topsy-turvy Bus (Ben & Jerry’s latest flavor?)

Tom Kennedy makes art car mash-ups the way Ben Cohen remixes ice cream: deliriously. Here, they combine their mix-and-mash-up magic to create their very own political machine–the Topsy-turvy Bus. Didrik and I caught up with them in Oakland a couple times during the course of the bus’ building.

Win Friends and Influence People, Drive an Art Car

Win Friends and Influence People, Drive an Art Car

To those rolling in flashy cars, a suggestion: Glue polyurethaned breakfast burritos, blowup dolls and slinky toys all over your precious rides; action-paint them in homage to Jackson Pollock; modify their bodies to resemble slabs of sashimi and shadow Kikkoman delivery trucks around town.
